Im moving to Calirfornia and I heard they have horrible Earth Quakes what should I do if one occurs?

My mom and I are moving to Calirfornia and the area we are moving to has earthquakes very often. If one occurs what should my mother and I do? I heard that you should go outside and just sit down on the gr or street until it ends and to stay out of your house until it ends. Is that true? if not what should we do then?
