What is the fundamental "purpose" in having Knowledge as it relates to enlightenment?

I should exempt myself from you question because I am dubious of the word "enlightenment" but nevertheless I will say I see information as "a communication between God and man" (Berkeley) so the purpose of it is to communicate.
