I wnat to dye my hair but...?

my hair is darkish/dirty blonde but lighter then dirty blonde. i want a new change, but not drastic, i have a medium/light skin tone but i have no clue what color to dye my hair, and also my friend said if i go dye my hair it can damage my hair and my hair will never go back to the same natural color ever again.... any help??? (oh i would be getting it done at a salon not doing it myself)
